Trumpet dynamo Mat Jodrell, fresh from a decade lighting up New York’s jazz scene, teams up with two phenomenal talents: pianist Simon Tedeschi, who effortlessly bridges the worlds of classical and jazz, and bassist Cameron Undy, known across Australia for his groove and dynamism. Together, this powerhouse trio dives into the soulful blues and the rich sounds of American music from the last century. It’s a jazz journey you won’t want to miss!

About Matthew Jodrell

Trumpeter Mat Jodrell is one of the most exciting voices in Jazz today. He has recently returned to Australia after having lived in New York City for eight years, performing around the city and teaching at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. During his time in the States, Mat was a regular member of many ensembles including Miguel Zenon’s ‘Identities’ Ensemble, Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project (both Grammy nominated in 2016), Lucas Pino’s No Net Nonet, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Miho Hazama’s MUnit, Pedro Giraudo’s Expansions Ensemble, Jon Batiste Band, the Birdland Big Band and many others.

Since re-locating to the US Mat has had the opportunity to perform with the likes of Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Carl Allen, Bill Watrous and Gary Bartz to name but a few. Between 2008 and 2012 Mat performed regularly on Broadway with the shows ‘Hair’ and ‘After Midnight’ and continues to work with legendary singer Paul Anka, with whom he has toured throughout the globe. He has performed in many of the world’s most famous jazz clubs in New York City including the Vanguard, Blue Note, Dizzy’s and Birdland,

as well as touring to many of the largest festivals including the Newport Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Mat completed his Masters of Music and Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School of Music, and was on faculty from 2011-2015. He continues to tour the world as leader, sideman and guest soloist.

In December 2021 Mat launched his latest album ‘Grateful’ at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. The album features Jimmy Macbride, Miki Yamanaka, Carl Mackey, Jordan Murray, and Sam Anning. His previous solo releases are ‘Insurgent’ (featuring Will Vinson, James Muller, Sam Anning, Ben Vanderwal) and ‘Echoes Of

Harlem’ (featuring Lewis Nash, Frank Kimbrough and Jay Anderson). Since moving back to Australia, Mat has been lecturing at the James Morrison Academy and the Victorian College of the Arts, as well as recording and touring with many projects including his co-led group, Speedball.

About Cameron Undy

Cameron Undy is a prominent Australian bassist/guitarist/composer, carving out a formidable career as a jazz bassist in the 90s in Australia, playing with all the luminaries and prodigies of the day from Paul Grabowsky to James Morrison to ‘acid jazz’ group Directions in Groove (aka DIG). He was co-founder and inaugural President of The Jazzgroove Association, an artist-led, artist-focused non-profit Association committed to presenting and raising the profile of jazz-based music in Australia. Cameron spent the early part of the 2000s recording and performing throughout Europe with the wave of ‘Nu Jazz’ dance floor artists, returning in 2004 to co-found the Sydney music venue 505, making the ‘Top Jazz Clubs in the World’ list in Downbeat Magazine from 2012–2019 and earning him a spot in Sydney Morning Herald’s annual ‘100 Most Influential and Inspiring People’ list in 2011.

Recent highlights include touring with legendary American saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, recording five albums with worldwide number one songwriter Passenger, and releasing three divergent solo albums, Bloodshot (Earshift Music 2021) and Ghost Frequency (Earshift Music 2021) – which received a 5 star review in The Weekend Australian (2022) – and Ghost Frequency II – Resonance (Earshift Music 2024). Currently Cameron is conducting research into algorithmically generative rhythm at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, and lecturing in jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
